STAR began in 1986 under the name of "Action for the Intellectually Disabled People-Tenancy Support Scheme".
The organisation was founded by a group of parents who were concerned for their child/ren who had an intellectual disability. Their concerns arose from the implementation of the deinstitutionalization policy being proposed by Government of the day.
This very dedicated and active group of parents lobbied I.D.S.C. (now known as Disability South Australia) for funds to establish a service that would assist their child/ren to develop the skills required to successfully take their place in their communities.
To teach, support, advocate for and create opportunities for adults with disabilities to have a community based lifestyle of their choice.
An organisation that has the financial resources to meet demand for our professional services.
The community has the responsibility to ensure that every individual has the greatest possible choice of lifestyle and life path. We believe that this responsibility can NOT be compromised on the grounds of a person's ability.
