Community Inclusion

STAR Volunteering (formerly the LIVE project) is designed to assist people to overcome social isolation. Social isolation can occur for anyone; however it most often occurs when people live alone and do not have contact with friends, family or networks such as employment and community. There are many older people and people with a disability who experience social isolation and STAR volunteers can assist by providing social support or respite support for parents of young people with a disability.

Our volunteer program is tailored to meet the needs of isolated individuals with disabilities and thus enhance their opportunities to experience genuine community inclusion.

STAR Volunteering creates opportunities for fulfilment, both for people with a disability and for community volunteers.

STAR Volunteering aims to

  • Provide personalised, sensitive and on going support within a friendly relationship through the one-to-one matching of a volunteer and client.
  • Encourage local people to help local members of their community to participate in everyday life.
  • Invite volunteers and clients to participate in the STAR social functions.
  • Provide opportunities for people with a disability to gain skills through volunteering.

Support

Both social and respite support involve spending time (approx 3-4 hrs a fortnight) one on one with an individual however there are a few main differences between the two.

Respite Support:

  • Involves supporting individuals under the age of 18, therefore giving their parents/carers some time to themselves (respite).
  • Volunteers may be required to assist with any money parents give the child for outings organised.
  • Involves more interaction/communication with parents.

Social Support:

  • IGenerally involves individuals over the age of 18.
  • In most volunteering situations, there is no need for the volunteer to play any part in the clients money handling
